Project Report: Warhammer AR Factions
Introduction / Overview
Warhammer AR Factions is a dynamic augmented reality application tailored for Warhammer retail stores. It immerses customers in the Warhammer universe, helping them understand the factions in more depth.
Description of the Application
What the Application Does:
The Warhammer AR Faction prototypes app’s purpose is to revolutionize in-store advertising for Warhammer stores. It enables customers to scan five different image targets, each representing a unique Warhammer faction and gives more information about each Warhammer faction. The full version would utilise object tracking and give information on a particular figurine when shown on the camera, the screen would then display its faction, what its role is and who it pairs well with. If two figurines of different factions are displayed it will show their typical stance towards each other.
Significance in a Retail Context:
In Warhammer retail stores, this application transforms traditional advertising by engaging customers on a new level. It draws customers into the Warhammer universe, creating a memorable and immersive experience that encourages brand loyalty.
Significance of AR Technology:
Augmented reality is pivotal in helping Warhammer products come to life within the store. It provides an interactive and captivating way for customers to explore the Warhammer factions, promoting a sense of wonder and curiosity. The use of AR technology would also allow for a quick response from the screen on what figurine is being held if someone did not know what they had. Depending on what is shown it could be cool to have displays for each figurine and then when shown, show the price as well as other things mentioned, if there is stock on hand and maybe some painting designs. It would allow customers to quickly access information without needing to find anyone and if someone suffered from social anxiety would allow them an out instead of having to ask a store worker. The use of learning the lore of these characters would also be enhanced as mentioned by Nouf Matar Alzahrani, AR is a “tool that can enhance learning”.
Interaction Design
Storyboard:
The interactions have been carefully designed to captivate customers within the retail setting. At its current state, allowing customers to scan faction symbols and discover more about each faction will help create an interactive and memorable advertising experience. The other interaction is when two factions are shown it will show their relationship, currently, it has minimal data for this but in the full version, there would be a lot more detail for each, giving information on special relationships if two figurines from the same faction have a particular relationship or if two figurines have crossed paths many times. These choices align with the strengths of augmented reality, offering an engaging and immersive experience whilst helping gain information for the shopper.
Technical Development
The Warhammer AR Faction app is designed to run on a computer within the Warhammer store. The computer will need to have a camera, a higher quality one, with good re-focusing capabilities would help greatly. The application could remain on a PC somewhere else in the store and connect to a monitor and camera for the shoppers specifically. The users would only need to place the figurine/faction on the table the camera is pointed at and check the screen for information, in this way, it is optimized for seamless integration into the Warhammer store environment, without a customer being able to mess with the configuration of the app itself. For the users to engage in an active interaction with this application, customers simply need to place a figurine/faction image at the designated table near the camera and screen and it will display a description of the particular figurine/faction or if two are placed, will show their relationship.
Descriptions of 3D Models
No 3D models in the current version, in a full version would contain a large database of figurines.
